Kvaternota

Kvaternota is a term found in some Czech and Slovak ethnographic and religious contexts to denote the status and duties associated with the kvater, the male sponsor in baptism and related rites. The concept centers on the social obligations that accompany sponsorship, beyond the purely ceremonial act of the ceremony itself.

Etymology and attestation are regional and historical. The form kvaternota appears in dialect and ecclesiastical literature, where it is described as the designation or rank of a kvater. In standard contemporary usage, the usual term for the role is kmotr (godfather), while kvaternota is encountered primarily in older texts or dialect dictionaries as a specific status within family and community networks.

Role and responsibilities associated with kvaternota typically include participation in the baptism, presenting gifts, and offering guidance and support to the child and the parents. In some communities, the kvater is also expected to assist with religious education, act as a witness at ceremonies, and help provide for the child’s welfare or upbringing as part of a broader network of godparents and sponsors.
