Kvadrát

Kvadrát is a Czech word that translates to "square" in English. It refers to a fundamental geometric shape and also has broader mathematical and colloquial meanings.

In geometry, a kvadrát is a quadrilateral with four equal sides and four right angles. It is a special case of a rectangle and a rhombus. The area of a kvadrát is calculated by squaring the length of one of its sides (side * side). Its perimeter is four times the length of a side.

The concept of kvadrát extends to algebra, where it represents the operation of squaring a number, meaning to multiply a number by itself. For example, the kvadrát of 5 is 25 (5 * 5). This is often denoted by an exponent of 2 (e.g., 5²).

In everyday Czech language, "kvadrát" can also be used colloquially to describe something that is square-shaped or, by extension, something that is rigid, uninteresting, or perhaps even a bit old-fashioned. For instance, someone might be described as thinking "kvadrátově" if they are perceived as being inflexible in their thinking. The term can also be used to refer to a city block or a small, enclosed space.
