Kustannustyyppejä, or cost types, is a fundamental concept in accounting and business management. Understanding different cost types is crucial for accurate financial reporting, effective budgeting, and informed decision-making. Costs can be categorized in various ways depending on the perspective and purpose.

One common classification is fixed versus variable costs. Fixed costs remain relatively constant regardless of the level of production or sales, such as rent or salaries. Variable costs, on the other hand, fluctuate directly with the volume of activity; for example, the cost of raw materials or direct labor. The sum of fixed and variable costs constitutes the total cost.

Another important distinction is between direct and indirect costs. Direct costs can be directly attributed to a specific product, service, or project. Examples include the materials used to manufacture a specific item or the wages paid to workers directly involved in its production. Indirect costs, also known as overheads, cannot be easily traced to a specific cost object and are often allocated across multiple products or departments. These can include administrative salaries, factory utilities, or depreciation of equipment used for multiple purposes.

Further classifications include product costs and period costs. Product costs are those associated with the manufacturing of goods and include direct materials, direct labor, and manufacturing overhead. These costs are inventoried until the product is sold. Period costs, in contrast, are expensed in the period in which they are incurred and include selling and administrative expenses.

Understanding these cost types helps businesses analyze profitability, set prices, control expenses, and make strategic choices regarding resource allocation and operational efficiency.
