Kupac

Kupac is a common noun in Croatian, Bosnian, and Serbian meaning a buyer or customer in a commercial transaction. It designates the person who purchases goods or services. In everyday language it appears on price tags, receipts, invoices, and in contracts, often alongside the seller, who is usually called prodavac or trgovac.

The term derives from the verb kupiti, “to buy,” and forms the agent noun kupac, literally “one who buys.” The plural form is kupci. The word is generally masculine in grammatical gender, though it refers to a person regardless of gender in practice.

In ordinary commerce Kupac can refer to any purchaser, whether casual consumer or business client. In legal contexts, it is used in phrases such as ugovor o kupoprodaji (sale and purchase agreement) or in describing the rights and obligations of the kupac under consumer protection laws. In consumer-oriented regulation, kupac is often distinguished from the seller (prodavac) or supplier, and from the user or consumer (potrošač), depending on jurisdiction.

Kupac is also used as a surname in some South Slavic regions. Variants exist in neighboring languages with similar meanings.
