Kultivátorokkal, often translated as cultivators or tillers, are agricultural implements used for soil preparation. They are designed to break up compacted soil, mix in fertilizers or amendments, and remove weeds. Cultivators work by using rotating tines or blades that churn the soil to a specific depth. This process helps to aerate the soil, improve water infiltration, and create a fine tilth suitable for planting seeds.

There are various types of cultivators, differing in their power source and mechanism. Some are powered by tractors, featuring a power take-off (PTO) drive to rotate the tines. These are common in larger agricultural operations. Smaller, walk-behind cultivators are also available, powered by gasoline or electric motors, and are suitable for home gardens or smaller plots. Implements can also vary in their tine configuration, with options like spring tines, rigid tines, or rotary tines, each offering different levels of soil disturbance.

The primary function of a cultivator is to loosen and mix the soil without inverting it, unlike a plow. This method helps to preserve soil structure and reduce the risk of erosion. Cultivators are used in both primary and secondary tillage operations. Primary tillage with a cultivator might follow a plow to further break down clods, while secondary tillage aims to create a fine seedbed just before planting. By effectively preparing the soil, cultivators contribute to healthier plant growth and improved crop yields.
