Kuljetuskontit

Kuljetuskontit, often referred to as shipping containers or intermodal containers, are standardized reusable metal boxes used for the safe, efficient, and secure transport of goods across different modes of transportation, such as ships, trains, and trucks. Their standardization is key to the success of global logistics, allowing for seamless transfer between these different systems without the need for repackaging.

The most common type is the standard dry cargo container, typically measuring 20 feet (TEU) or 40 feet (FEU) in length. These containers are constructed from steel and designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions and the stresses of transportation. Other variations exist, including refrigerated containers (reefers) for temperature-sensitive goods, open-top containers for oversized cargo, and tank containers for bulk liquids and gases.

The development of the modern shipping container in the mid-20th century revolutionized international trade. Before containers, goods were loaded and unloaded individually, a labor-intensive and time-consuming process. Containers significantly reduced handling costs, transit times, and cargo damage. They are a fundamental component of the global supply chain, facilitating the movement of a vast array of products worldwide.
