Kukë

Kukë is a city located in northeastern Albania, serving as the administrative center of the Kukë County and the municipality of Kukë. It is situated in a mountainous region, near the Drin River. The city's strategic location has historically made it an important point of transit and settlement.

The area has a long history of habitation, with evidence of Illyrian settlements dating back to ancient times. During the Ottoman period, Kukë developed as a small trading post. However, its modern development is significantly linked to the construction of the Fierza Hydroelectric Power Station on the Drin River in the latter half of the 20th century. This project led to the relocation of the old city of Kukë, which was submerged by the rising waters of the artificial lake created by the dam. The new city was built on higher ground.

Kukë is known for its natural beauty, surrounded by hills and mountains, offering opportunities for outdoor activities. The artificial lake of Fierza is a prominent feature, impacting the local landscape and economy. The region is also culturally significant, with a distinct local dialect and traditions.
