Kuitotekniikka, also known as paper technology, refers to the processes and techniques used in the production of paper and paperboard. This field encompasses a wide range of activities, from the preparation of raw materials to the final production of paper products. The primary raw materials used in paper production are cellulose fibers, which are derived from wood, non-wood plants, or recycled paper. The process begins with the pulping of these materials, where the fibers are separated and broken down into individual cells. This is followed by the refining and bleaching stages, which improve the quality and appearance of the fibers.

The paper-making process itself involves several steps. First, the fibers are suspended in water to form a pulp. This pulp is then spread onto a wire mesh or felt screen, where water is drained off, leaving behind a mat of fibers. The mat is pressed to remove more water and then dried, typically using heat. The resulting paper is then calendered to smooth the surface and improve its appearance.
