Kufas

Kufas is a village situated in the municipality of Hranice within the Litomerice District of the Czech Republic. The settlement lies in the rolling hills of the Moravian countryside, approximately twelve kilometres southeast of the town of Hranice, at an elevation of 226 metres above sea level. Its coordinates are 49°43′N 16°15′E. The village covers an area of 2.6 square kilometres.

The population of Kufas was recorded as 347 inhabitants in the 2021 national census, a modest increase from 322 in 2011. Residents are predominantly ethnic Czech, with a small minority of Slovak citizens, and the official language is Czech. The community maintains a parish church that serves as a local centre for religious and social gatherings. The village hosts an annual harvest festival in late September, featuring traditional Moravian music, dance, and agriculturally produced goods such as honey, rye bread, and homemade cheeses.

Agriculture is the principal economic activity in Kufas, with a focus on cereal cultivation and livestock breeding. Small family farms spread across surrounding fields produce wheat, barley, and potatoes, while cattle and pig herding remain common. In recent years there has been a modest development of agrotourism, with a handful of rural guesthouses offering visitors a rural Czech experience.

Notable geographic features include a nearby stream feeding into the Hranice River, providing irrigation and an ecosystem that supports a variety of freshwater fish species. The surrounding forested areas are part of a regional conservation initiative aimed at preserving wildlife habitats and promoting sustainable forestry practices.
