Krystallgrensene, which translates to "crystal boundaries" in English, refers to the interfaces between adjacent crystals in a polycrystalline material. These boundaries are regions where the atomic arrangement is disordered compared to the perfect lattice structure of the crystals themselves. The properties of a material are significantly influenced by the nature and extent of these grain boundaries.

Grain boundaries are formed during the solidification or recrystallization processes of materials. When a molten material cools, multiple nuclei form and grow into individual crystals. As these crystals expand, they eventually meet, and the region where their lattices are not aligned becomes a grain boundary. The orientation mismatch between neighboring grains dictates the structure and energy of the boundary.

The presence of grain boundaries affects various material properties. For instance, they can act as barriers to dislocation movement, increasing the material's strength and hardness, a phenomenon known as grain boundary strengthening. Conversely, grain boundaries can also facilitate diffusion and creep at elevated temperatures, potentially weakening the material. They can also be sites for impurity segregation, which may lead to embrittlement or corrosion. Understanding and controlling Krystallgrensene is therefore crucial in materials science and engineering for tailoring the performance of metals, ceramics, and other polycrystalline substances.
