Kruisingenvolgorde is a Dutch term that translates to "order of operations" in English. It refers to the specific sequence of mathematical operations that must be followed when evaluating an expression to ensure a consistent and correct result. Without a defined order, different interpretations of the same expression could lead to different answers.

The standard order of operations is commonly remembered by acronyms such as PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction) or BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction). These acronyms outline the hierarchy of operations. First, operations within parentheses or brackets are performed. Next, exponents or orders (powers and roots) are calculated. Following this, multiplication and division are carried out from left to right. Finally, addition and subtraction are performed, also from left to right.

For example, in the expression 2 + 3 * 4, the multiplication should be done before the addition, resulting in 2 + 12 = 14. If the addition were performed first, the result would be 5 * 4 = 20, which is incorrect.
