Kriesomvandling, also known as chromate conversion coating, is a chemical surface treatment process used primarily to enhance the corrosion resistance and aesthetic appeal of metals, particularly zinc. The process involves the deposition of a thin, protective layer of chromium oxide on the metal surface. This layer acts as a barrier, preventing the underlying metal from reacting with the environment and thus extending the lifespan of the metal component.

The process typically begins with the cleaning of the metal surface to remove any contaminants, such as oils, greases, or oxides. The cleaned surface is then immersed in a bath containing chromic acid and other chemicals. The chromic acid reacts with the metal surface, forming a layer of chromium oxide. The thickness and properties of the coating can be controlled by adjusting the concentration of the chemicals and the duration of the immersion process.

Kriesomvandling is widely used in the automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries due to its ability to provide a durable, corrosion-resistant finish. However, it is important to note that the process involves the use of hazardous chemicals, including hexavalent chromium, which is known to be carcinogenic. As a result, there has been a growing interest in developing alternative coating technologies that offer similar or better performance without the environmental and health risks associated with chromate conversion coating.
