Krüoprotektoritega, often translated as cryoprotectants, are substances used to protect biological tissues from damage during freezing. These compounds are essential for many cryopreservation techniques, including the long-term storage of cells, tissues, and even whole organisms. Their primary function is to reduce the formation of ice crystals, which can puncture cell membranes and disrupt cellular structures.

Cryoprotectants work through several mechanisms. Firstly, they can lower the freezing point of water, allowing tissues to be cooled to lower temperatures before freezing occurs. Secondly, they can form a glassy, amorphous solid state (vitrification) instead of crystalline ice. This glassy state encapsulates the biological material, preventing the formation of damaging ice crystals. Common examples of cryoprotectants include glycerol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and various sugars.

The effectiveness of a cryoprotectant depends on its concentration, the rate of cooling, and the specific type of biological material being preserved. Too high a concentration can be toxic to cells, while too low a concentration may not provide adequate protection. Careful optimization is therefore crucial for successful cryopreservation. Cryoprotectants are widely used in scientific research, fertility preservation, and organ transplantation efforts, playing a vital role in extending the viability of biological samples.
