Kostutusjäähdyttimet, also known as evaporative coolers or swamp coolers, are devices that cool air through the evaporation of water. They work by drawing warm, dry outside air through a water-saturated pad. As the water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the air, thus cooling it down. The cooled, humidified air is then blown into the desired space. This process relies on the principle of latent heat of vaporization, where energy is consumed to change water from a liquid to a gas.

Evaporative coolers are most effective in arid or semi-arid climates where the humidity is naturally low. In high humidity environments, the evaporation process is significantly less efficient, and the effectiveness of the cooler diminishes. They are typically simpler in design and consume less energy than traditional compressor-based air conditioning systems. Common applications include residential cooling in dry regions, industrial processes requiring humidity control, and agricultural settings.

The main components of a kostutusjäähdytin typically include a fan, a water pump, a water reservoir, and cooling pads. The fan pulls air through the pads, which are kept wet by the pump circulating water from the reservoir. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the pads and reservoir, is necessary to ensure optimal performance and prevent the growth of mold or bacteria. The cooling effect is often described as a "fresh" or "natural" coolness, as opposed to the dry, chilled air produced by conventional air conditioners.
