Kostutusjäähdytin

Kostutusjäähdytin, also known as evaporative cooler or swamp cooler, is a device that cools air through the evaporation of water. Unlike refrigeration-based air conditioners that use a refrigerant cycle, evaporative coolers rely on the natural process of water evaporation. As water turns into vapor, it absorbs heat from the surrounding air, thereby lowering the air temperature.

The basic principle involves a fan drawing warm, dry outside air through a wet medium, typically a water-soaked pad. As the air passes through the saturated pad, water evaporates from the pad, cooling the air. This cooler, humidified air is then circulated into the space. The effectiveness of an evaporative cooler is highly dependent on the relative humidity of the ambient air. They are most efficient in hot, dry climates where the air can readily absorb more moisture. In humid environments, their cooling capacity is significantly reduced because the air is already saturated with water vapor.

Evaporative coolers consume less energy compared to conventional air conditioners and do not use refrigerants, making them a more environmentally friendly option. They also add moisture to the air, which can be beneficial in arid regions where dry air can cause discomfort. However, they require a continuous supply of water and regular maintenance to prevent mold and mineral buildup in the water pads. The discharge air is also humidified, which might not be desirable in all applications.
