This field seeks to understand the universe on the largest scales, encompassing everything from the Big Bang to the formation of galaxies and the nature of dark matter and dark energy. Cosmological models are built upon observations from astronomy, such as the cosmic microwave background radiation, the distribution of galaxies, and the expansion of space.

The Standard Model of Cosmology, often referred to as the Lambda-CDM model, is the prevailing framework. It posits that the universe began with a rapid expansion known as the Big Bang, and that its current accelerated expansion is driven by dark energy, represented by the cosmological constant (Lambda). The model also incorporates cold dark matter (CDM), a hypothetical form of matter that interacts gravitationally but not electromagnetically.

Key areas of cosmological research include investigating the very early universe, understanding the processes that led to the formation of large-scale structures, and exploring the nature of fundamental forces and particles. The study of cosmological parameters, such as the Hubble constant (which measures the rate of expansion) and the density of matter and energy, is crucial for refining our understanding of the universe.
