Korrelációról

Korrelációról (Correlation) is a statistical measure that describes the degree to which two variables move in relation to each other. It is a fundamental concept in statistics and data analysis, used to understand the relationship between two variables. The most common measure of correlation is the Pearson correlation coefficient, which quantifies the linear relationship between two continuous variables. The value of the Pearson correlation coefficient ranges from -1 to 1, where 1 indicates a perfect positive linear relationship, -1 indicates a perfect negative linear relationship, and 0 indicates no linear relationship.

Correlation is distinct from causation. A high correlation between two variables does not imply that one variable causes the other. For example, there may be a strong correlation between ice cream sales and the number of drownings, but this does not mean that eating ice cream causes drowning. Correlation only indicates that the variables tend to change together.

There are other types of correlation measures, such as the Spearman rank correlation coefficient, which assesses the monotonic relationship between two variables, and the Kendall tau correlation coefficient, which measures the ordinal association between two variables. These measures are useful when the data do not meet the assumptions required for the Pearson correlation coefficient.
