Korkeapäästösuodatin, often translated as a high-pass filter, is an electronic filter that allows higher frequencies to pass through while attenuating frequencies below a certain cutoff frequency. This cutoff frequency is a critical parameter that defines the point at which the filter begins to significantly reduce the amplitude of incoming signals.

The primary function of a high-pass filter is to remove low-frequency noise, direct current (DC) components, or unwanted bass frequencies from a signal. In audio applications, for example, high-pass filters can be used to eliminate rumble from turntables or to prevent low-frequency energy from reaching tweeters, which are not designed to reproduce such sounds. They are also used in signal processing for various purposes, including isolating specific frequency bands or shaping the spectral content of a signal.

The design of a high-pass filter can vary. Simple passive high-pass filters can be constructed using only resistors and capacitors. More complex active high-pass filters incorporate active components like operational amplifiers, which can provide gain and improve performance characteristics. The order of a filter also influences its steepness, or how rapidly it attenuates frequencies below the cutoff. Higher-order filters offer a sharper transition between the passband and the stopband.
