Kopiointivarianssit, known in English as copy-variance, is a concept in programming languages and type systems that deals with how types can be modified when they are used in covariant, contravariant, or invariant positions. It is particularly relevant in the context of generic types and subtyping.

Covariance refers to a situation where if a type `A` is a subtype of type `B`, then a generic type instantiation `G<A>` is also a subtype of `G<B>`. This is common for return types. For example, if `Dog` is a subtype of `Animal`, then a function returning a `Dog` can be treated as a function returning an `Animal`.

Contravariance is the opposite. If `A` is a subtype of `B`, then `G<B>` is a subtype of `G<A>`. This is often seen in input parameters. For instance, if a function accepts an `Animal`, it can also accept a `Dog`, as `Dog` is a subtype of `Animal`.

Invariance means that if `A` is a subtype of `B`, neither `G<A>` is a subtype of `G<B>` nor `G<B>` is a subtype of `G<A>`. The types must match exactly. This is the default behavior for generic types in many languages like Java.

Understanding copy-variance is crucial for writing safe and flexible generic code, preventing type errors at runtime, and enabling polymorphism in a well-defined manner within a type system. Different programming languages implement these variances with varying degrees of explicitness and support.
