Koordinátatengelyt refers to coordinate axes, which are fundamental concepts in mathematics and physics used to define the position of points in space. In a two-dimensional Cartesian coordinate system, the most common type, there are two perpendicular axes: the horizontal axis, known as the x-axis, and the vertical axis, known as the y-axis. Their intersection point is called the origin, which has coordinates (0,0).

Each point in this plane is uniquely identified by an ordered pair of numbers, (x, y), where the x-coordinate represents the distance of the point from the y-axis along the x-axis, and the y-coordinate represents the distance of the point from the x-axis along the y-axis. In three-dimensional Cartesian coordinates, a third axis, the z-axis, is added, perpendicular to both the x and y axes. Points in this space are then represented by ordered triples (x, y, z).

The concept of coordinate axes is crucial for graphing functions, solving systems of equations, and describing geometric shapes. They provide a systematic way to visualize and manipulate abstract mathematical relationships. Variations exist, such as polar coordinates, which use an angle and a distance from a central point, but the Cartesian system with its perpendicular axes remains the most widely used and fundamental representation. The direction of the axes is conventionally defined such that moving along the positive x-axis to the right and the positive y-axis upwards is standard in most contexts.
