Konvergensvilkår

Konvergensvilkår refers to the conditions under which different societies or economies tend to converge towards similar levels of development or wealth. This concept is central to various economic and sociological theories. In economics, convergence suggests that poorer countries or regions are likely to grow faster than richer ones, eventually narrowing the gap in per capita income and living standards. This is often attributed to factors such as the diffusion of technology, knowledge, and capital from more developed areas to less developed ones. For convergence to occur, certain prerequisites are often identified, including open trade policies, stable political institutions, investments in education and infrastructure, and access to global markets.

There are different types of convergence. Absolute convergence posits that all countries will eventually reach the same income level, regardless of their starting point. Conditional convergence, on the other hand, suggests that convergence will only happen if countries share similar underlying characteristics, such as similar savings rates, population growth rates, and access to technology. Divergence, the opposite of convergence, describes a situation where the gap between richer and poorer entities widens over time.
