Konvektionsbortförsel, often translated as convective heat or mass transfer, describes the movement of heat or substances within a fluid (liquid or gas) caused by the fluid's own motion. This motion is typically driven by density differences that arise from temperature gradients. Warmer, less dense fluid rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks, creating a circulating current. This continuous circulation efficiently transfers heat or dissolves substances throughout the fluid.

In natural convection, the fluid movement is solely due to these density differences. A common example is the heating of a room by a radiator. The air near the radiator gets warm, becomes less dense, and rises, displacing cooler air which then sinks and is heated in turn. This creates a convection current that circulates the air and distributes heat.

Forced convection occurs when an external force, such as a fan or pump, is used to move the fluid. This enhances the rate of heat or mass transfer compared to natural convection. Examples include a fan blowing air over a hot surface to cool it or a pump circulating coolant through an engine.
