Kontrolleriyksikkö

A kontrolleriyksikkö, often translated as control unit or controller, is a fundamental component within a computer system's central processing unit (CPU). Its primary role is to manage and coordinate the execution of instructions. The kontrolleriyksikkö fetches instructions from memory, decodes them to understand what operation needs to be performed, and then directs the other parts of the CPU, such as the arithmetic logic unit (ALU) and registers, to carry out that operation.

This process typically involves a cycle of fetching, decoding, and executing. The kontrolleriyksikkö maintains the program counter (PC), which holds the memory address of the next instruction to be executed. After fetching an instruction, it increments the PC to point to the subsequent instruction. The decoded instruction then triggers a sequence of control signals that orchestrate data movement, arithmetic operations, and logical comparisons. It also manages input and output operations, ensuring that data is transferred correctly between the CPU and peripheral devices.
