Kontrastide

Kontrastide is a term used in medical imaging to refer to substances known as contrast agents or contrast media that are introduced into the body to improve the visibility of internal structures on imaging studies. The usage and terminology can vary by language, but kontras­tide generally denotes agents that alter the way tissues appear on radiologic or other imaging modalities.

Common kontrastides include iodine-based agents for X-ray and computed tomography (CT) scans, gadolinium-based agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and barium sulfate suspensions for fluoroscopic and GI studies. Ultrasound imaging may employ microbubble contrast agents to enhance signals from blood or tissue perfusion. These substances are chosen based on the imaging modality and the body region being examined.

Mechanistically, kontrastides work by changing the physical properties of tissues: iodine or gadolinium affects attenuation and relaxation times, while microbubbles modify acoustic reflectivity. This creates a greater distinction between normal and abnormal tissues, helping to detect lesions, inflammation, or vascular abnormalities.

Administration routes vary: intravenous or intra-arterial administration for CT and MRI, oral or rectal for GI studies, and intravenous or targeted delivery for some ultrasound applications. Safety considerations include the potential for allergic reactions, kidney-related risks with iodinated agents, and, in some cases, gadolinium-related concerns in patients with kidney impairment. Proper screening, dosing, and monitoring are standard practices.
