Kontingenssitaulut, also known as contingency tables, are a fundamental tool in statistics used to display the frequency distribution of variables. They are particularly useful for examining the relationship between two or more categorical variables. A contingency table is essentially a matrix where the rows represent the categories of one variable and the columns represent the categories of another variable. The cells within the table contain the counts or frequencies of observations that fall into each combination of categories.

The primary purpose of a contingency table is to help researchers identify patterns and associations between variables. By observing the distribution of frequencies across the table, one can infer whether the variables are independent or dependent. For instance, if the distribution of one variable changes depending on the category of the other variable, it suggests a relationship.

Several statistical tests are commonly applied to contingency tables to formally assess the independence of variables. The chi-squared test of independence is the most well-known and widely used test. This test compares the observed frequencies in the table to the frequencies that would be expected if the variables were truly independent. Other measures, such as Cramer's V or the phi coefficient, can be used to quantify the strength of the association between variables.
