Kontextfreier

Kontextfreier is a German term meaning "context-free." In linguistics and formal language theory, it denotes properties or systems that do not rely on the immediate linguistic context when applying rules. In formal language theory, context-free refers to grammars in which production rules replace a single nonterminal symbol, independent of surrounding terminals or nonterminals. A context-free grammar G is defined by a tuple (V, Σ, R, S) with V nonterminals, Σ terminals, R production rules, and S the start symbol. Context-free languages can be recognized by pushdown automata and are closed under union, concatenation, and Kleene star. They support hierarchical structure such as nested parentheses and matched constructs.

Common examples include the grammar for balanced parentheses: S -> SS | ( S ) | ε, which generates strings of properly nested parentheses. Context-free grammars underpin most programming language syntax and are central to compiler design, enabling parsers such as LL and LR parsers. In natural language processing, context-free grammars have historically been used as a simplifying model, though natural languages often require more expressive formalisms to capture long-range dependencies and contextual choice.
