These formulas provide a standardized way to communicate the complexity and capabilities of a particular contact set.

The core of a kontaktusképlet lies in a numerical or symbolic representation that indicates the number of poles and throws. A "pole" refers to a single, independently operated electrical circuit. A "throw" represents the number of different positions a pole can be switched to. For instance, a single-pole, single-throw (SPST) switch has one circuit that can be either on or off. A single-pole, double-throw (SPDT) switch has one circuit that can connect to one of two other terminals.

More complex kontaktusképletek include notations like single-pole, double-throw, center-off (SPDT-CO), indicating a neutral or off position in the middle. Double-pole configurations, such as double-pole, double-throw (DPDT), involve two independent circuits, each with multiple throw options.
