Kontaktszögek, a term originating from German, translates to "contact angles" in English. This concept is fundamental in surface science and physics, describing the angle formed at the point where a liquid-vapor interface and a solid surface meet. It is essentially a measure of how completely a liquid wets a solid surface.

The contact angle is determined by the balance of interfacial tensions between the liquid and the solid, the liquid and the vapor, and the solid and the vapor. If the liquid spreads out completely on the solid, the contact angle is close to zero degrees, indicating excellent wetting. Conversely, if the liquid beads up on the solid, forming a distinct droplet with a high contact angle (approaching 180 degrees), it signifies poor wetting. Intermediate contact angles indicate varying degrees of wettability.

Factors influencing the contact angle include the chemical nature of both the liquid and the solid surface, as well as the surface roughness and cleanliness. For instance, a polar liquid like water will have a different contact angle on a polar solid surface compared to a non-polar surface. Surface treatments can be employed to modify the wettability of a material, thereby altering its contact angle for specific applications.

Understanding and controlling contact angles are crucial in numerous fields. In printing and coating processes, controlled wettability ensures uniform spread of inks and paints. In microfluidics, contact angles dictate fluid flow within tiny channels. The textile industry utilizes them to create water-repellent or absorbent fabrics, and in biology, they play a role in phenomena like cell adhesion and dewetting.
