Kontaktlinsenpassung, also known as contact lens fitting, is the process of determining the correct type and specifications of contact lenses for an individual. This process is crucial for ensuring comfortable wear, clear vision, and eye health. It is typically performed by an eye care professional, such as an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

The fitting process begins with a comprehensive eye examination to assess the wearer's vision, eye health, and prescription. Measurements of the cornea, including its curvature (base curve) and diameter, are taken using specialized instruments. The eye care professional also evaluates tear film stability and the overall health of the ocular surface.

Based on these findings, different types of contact lenses are considered. These include soft lenses (daily disposables, bi-weekly, monthly), rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, and specialized lenses for conditions like astigmatism (toric lenses) or presbyopia (multifocal lenses). The chosen lens material and design are important for oxygen permeability, comfort, and suitability for the individual's lifestyle and eye conditions.

A trial fitting is then conducted, where the patient tries on specific lenses. The eye care professional observes how the lenses move on the eye, their centration, and how they interact with the eyelids. Visual acuity is checked with the trial lenses. The wearer is also asked about their subjective comfort and vision quality.

Adjustments to the base curve, diameter, or lens power may be made if the initial fit is not optimal. The goal is to achieve a lens that is stable, moves appropriately with blinking, provides sharp vision, and remains comfortable throughout the wearing period. Once the correct lens is identified, the patient receives instructions on proper lens care, handling, and wearing schedule to maintain eye health and prevent complications. Regular follow-up appointments are recommended to monitor lens wear and eye health.
