Konstanttivirtasysteemiä, often translated as constant current system, is a method used in electrical engineering to maintain a steady and controlled flow of electrical current through a circuit or device. This is in contrast to constant voltage systems, where the voltage is kept stable, allowing the current to vary depending on the load. In a constant current system, the current is the regulated parameter.

Such systems are employed when a device's operation, efficiency, or lifespan is highly dependent on a specific and unchanging current level. For example, in LEDs, maintaining a constant current is crucial to prevent them from overheating and failing prematurely, as well as to ensure consistent brightness. Similarly, in some battery charging applications, a constant current phase is used to safely charge the battery before transitioning to a constant voltage phase.

The implementation of a constant current system typically involves a control circuit that monitors the actual current flowing through the circuit. If the current deviates from the setpoint, the control circuit adjusts components, such as transistors or specific integrated circuits, to bring the current back to the desired level. This feedback loop ensures that regardless of fluctuations in input voltage or changes in the resistance of the load, the output current remains constant. These systems are valuable in applications requiring precise current delivery for optimal performance and reliability.
