In Finnish, for example, initial consonant clusters are restricted, with certain combinations being more common than others. Words rarely begin with more than two consonants, and even then, only specific pairings are permitted, such as 'str' in 'strut' or 'pr' in 'prinsessa'. Medial consonant clusters, occurring within a word, are more varied. Final consonant clusters are also present, though often simplified in spoken Finnish.

The presence and type of consonant clusters can vary greatly between languages. Some languages, like Georgian, allow for very complex consonant clusters at the beginning of words, while others, like Hawaiian, have very few or none. The analysis of consonant clusters is crucial in understanding phonotactics, the rules governing the permissible sequencing of sounds in a language. It also plays a role in linguistic typology and historical linguistics when comparing sound changes across languages.
