It encompasses the set of consonant sounds that are phonetically distinct in that language, as well as the rules governing their distribution and interaction. Linguists analyze consonant systems to understand the phonetic inventory of a language and how these sounds are produced and perceived.

The classification of consonants is based on several articulatory features. These include the place of articulation (where in the mouth the airflow is obstructed), the manner of articulation (how the airflow is obstructed), and voicing (whether the vocal cords vibrate during production). For example, in Finnish, sounds like /p/, /t/, and /k/ are voiceless stops, while /b/, /d/, and /g/ are voiced stops. The fricatives like /f/, /s/, and /h/ involve a narrower constriction, creating friction. Nasals like /m/, /n/, and /ŋ/ are produced with air escaping through the nose.

The concept of a consonant system also considers phonological rules that govern how consonants behave in different contexts. This can include assimilation, where a consonant becomes more like a neighboring sound, or deletion, where a consonant is omitted. For instance, in some languages, a final consonant might be dropped before a vowel-initial word.
