Kondensatventile, also known as condensate drains or steam traps, are crucial components in steam systems. Their primary function is to remove condensate, which is water formed when steam loses heat and condenses, from steam lines and equipment. This removal is essential for several reasons. Firstly, condensate can cause water hammer, a destructive phenomenon that can damage piping and equipment. Secondly, the presence of condensate reduces the efficiency of heat transfer in steam-heated equipment, leading to higher energy consumption.

Kondensatventile operate based on various principles, including mechanical (float or inverted bucket), thermostatic, or thermodynamic. Mechanical traps utilize the difference in density between steam and condensate. Float traps, for example, have a buoyant float that rises with condensate and closes when steam enters, preventing steam loss. Inverted bucket traps use a bucket that fills with steam, becoming buoyant and closing the valve, but vents steam when condensate replaces it. Thermostatic traps respond to temperature differences, opening when cooler condensate arrives and closing as hotter steam approaches. Thermodynamic traps operate on the principle of flashing, where steam entering a cooler chamber causes a rapid pressure drop, actuating the valve.

Proper selection and maintenance of kondensatventile are vital for efficient and safe steam system operation. Incorrectly chosen or malfunctioning traps can lead to significant energy waste, equipment damage, and safety hazards. Regular inspection and testing help ensure they are performing their intended function of removing condensate without discharging excessive amounts of live steam.
