Kompressiooniastmed, or compression ratios, refer to the ratio of the volume of a cylinder in an internal combustion engine at the bottom dead center to its volume at the top dead center. This ratio is a critical factor influencing engine performance and efficiency. A higher compression ratio generally leads to greater power output and improved fuel economy because it allows for more energy to be extracted from the fuel during the combustion process.

The compression stroke in an engine involves the piston moving upwards, reducing the volume available for the air-fuel mixture. The compression ratio quantifies how much this volume is reduced. For instance, a compression ratio of 10:1 means the volume at bottom dead center is ten times larger than the volume at top dead center.

However, increasing the compression ratio too much can lead to engine knocking or detonation, where the fuel-air mixture ignites prematurely due to excessive heat and pressure. This can cause engine damage. Therefore, the optimal compression ratio is a balance between performance gains and the prevention of such issues, often influenced by the type of fuel used and engine design. Gasoline engines typically have lower compression ratios than diesel engines, as diesel fuel ignites under pressure alone without the need for a spark plug. Modern engine management systems play a crucial role in managing compression and preventing knocking.
