Komplexképzés, also known as complexation or complex formation, is a chemical process where a central atom or ion, typically a metal, binds to a surrounding molecule or ion called a ligand. This interaction results in the formation of a coordination complex, which is a molecule or ion where a central atom is attached to one or more surrounding molecules or atoms. The ligands donate at least one pair of electrons to the central atom, forming coordinate covalent bonds.

The nature of the central atom and the ligands dictates the properties and stability of the resulting complex. Metal ions, particularly transition metals, are common central atoms due to their ability to accept electron pairs. Ligands can be neutral molecules like water (H₂O) or ammonia (NH₃), or they can be anions such as chloride (Cl⁻) or cyanide (CN⁻). The number of ligands bound to the central atom is known as the coordination number, and it is often determined by the size and electronic configuration of the central atom.
