Examples of complementary products are abundant in everyday life. Coffee and sugar are a classic pair; if the price of coffee rises significantly, consumers might buy less coffee, and consequently, they would likely also purchase less sugar. Similarly, printers and ink cartridges are complementary. If the price of printers falls, more people will buy printers, which in turn will increase the demand for ink cartridges. Other common examples include peanut butter and jelly, smartphones and apps, cars and gasoline, and game consoles and video games.

Understanding the relationship between complementary products is crucial for businesses in their pricing and marketing strategies. Companies often consider the pricing of their complements when setting their own prices. For instance, a company selling a popular game console might price it competitively, knowing that the profit margins on the complementary video games will be substantial.
