Komplemendi

Komplemendi is a term used in Estonian-language discourse to denote the concept of a complement. It is a loanword from the international term complemento/complement, and in Estonian the form komplemendi appears in contexts referring to a complement in grammar, logic, and mathematics.

In mathematics and set theory, the complement of a set A within a universal set U consists of all elements of U that are not in A. This is commonly written as A^c or U \ A. The notion of a complement helps describe what remains when a subset is removed from a larger context, and it is fundamental to operations such as union, intersection, and difference.

In logic and computer science, the complement of a proposition or boolean condition refers to its negation. The concept is used to express what is not true given a particular statement, and it underpins logical laws and reasoning about truth values.

In linguistics and grammar, a complement is a word or phrase that completes the meaning of a predicate, adjective, or noun. Complements provide necessary information that the head word requires to form a complete thought, as opposed to adjuncts, which add optional information. Examples in English include subject complements, object complements, and certain prepositional complements.

Etymologically, komplemendi traces back to the Latin term complementum, through French and other European languages, and has been adapted into Estonian as part of the mathematical, logical, and linguistic vocabulary.
