Many languages have cognate terms such as italiano commento, español comentario, português comentário, and svenska kommentar. Spelling varies, but the function is similar: to communicate an aside or analysis about a piece of content.

Online and public discourse: Comments enable interaction, feedback, and community building but require moderation to maintain civility and prevent abuse. Features include threading, upvoting, reporting, and moderation queues. Practices such as civil tone, relevance, and avoiding personal attacks are commonly encouraged.
