Kolmitieventtiili, or three-way valve, is a type of valve with three ports. These valves are commonly used in heating and cooling systems to control the flow of a fluid, such as water or steam. They can be configured to direct flow in various ways depending on the valve's design and the system's requirements.

There are two main types of three-way valves: mixing valves and diverting valves. A mixing valve has two inlets and one outlet, combining two different fluid streams into a single stream. For example, in a heating system, a mixing valve might combine hot water from a boiler with cooler return water to achieve a desired supply temperature. A diverting valve, conversely, has one inlet and two outlets. It can either direct the entire flow to one outlet or split the flow between the two outlets. This is often used to bypass a heat exchanger or to direct flow to different parts of a system.

The operation of a three-way valve is typically controlled by an actuator, which can be electric, pneumatic, or manual. The actuator moves a valve element, such as a ball or a plug, to regulate the opening and closing of the ports, thereby controlling the fluid flow. The precise control offered by three-way valves makes them essential components for efficient temperature regulation and fluid distribution in various HVAC applications. Their versatility allows for complex flow management strategies, contributing to energy savings and improved system performance.
