This appointment was based on the presentation of a candidate by a patron, who might be a layperson, a religious order, or another ecclesiastical body.

The process of collation involved examining the qualifications and suitability of the presented candidate. If the candidate was deemed suitable, the bishop would then "collate" them to the benefice, bestowing upon them the spiritual and temporal rights and duties associated with it. This act of collation signified the formal granting of ecclesiastical office.
