Kolbenbahn
Kolbenbahn, literally “piston railway” in German, designates a class of rail propulsion concepts that rely on pistons to generate or transmit motive force. In a typical arrangement the piston is connected to a crank or to wheels, and is driven by a pressure source—commonly compressed air or hydraulic fluid—either on the vehicle or in trackside cylinders. The resultant linear motion of the piston is converted into rotational motion to drive the wheels, or directly to drive the vehicle along guides.
Variations include piston-propelled carriages that pull or push against cylinders or tubes, as well as closed-tube
Historically, kolbenbahn concepts appeared in the 19th and early 20th centuries as engineers explored alternatives to
In modern references, kolbenbahn is primarily of historical interest or used in academic discussions of propulsion
