Kokteelien

Kokteelien is a term used to describe a group of alcoholic mixed drinks. The word itself is thought to originate from the French term "coquetel," which referred to a type of egg cup, or possibly from the Aztec word "xocolatl," meaning bitter water. The exact etymology remains debated. Cocktails typically consist of one or more spirits mixed with other ingredients such as fruit juices, flavored syrups, cream, or bitters. Garnishes like fruit slices, olives, or herbs are often added for visual appeal and to enhance the aroma and flavor.

The history of cocktails can be traced back to at least the 17th century, with early forms appearing in Europe. However, the modern concept of the cocktail gained prominence in the United States during the 19th century. The Prohibition era in the United States (1920-1933) ironically led to a surge in cocktail consumption as people sought ways to mask the taste of illegally produced spirits, often referred to as "bathtub gin." Post-Prohibition, the popularity of cocktails continued to grow, leading to the development of countless recipes and variations. Today, cocktails are a significant part of bar culture worldwide, with bartenders often considered artists for their ability to craft balanced and innovative drinks.
