KohtlaJärve

Kohtla-Järve is a city and municipality in Ida-Viru County, in northeastern Estonia. It is one of the larger towns in the county and lies in a region historically associated with oil shale mining and energy production. The municipality includes several districts, notably Ahtme and Järve.

Historically, Kohtla-Järve grew as a planned urban center during the Soviet era. It was formed in the mid-20th century through the consolidation of a number of smaller settlements that developed around oil shale mines and power plants. The name reflects the joining of two established places, Kohtla and Järve, to create a single urban municipality.

Demographics and society: The population includes a significant Russian-speaking community, a pattern common in Ida-Viru County. The city provides educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and public services serving residents and surrounding villages.

Economy and environment: For decades the local economy relied on oil shale extraction, processing, and power generation.
