Koeberg

Koeberg Nuclear Power Station is a nuclear power facility located on the Atlantic coast at Koeberg, near Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is operated by Eskom, the state-owned electricity utility.

The plant consists of two pressurized water reactors, Unit 1 and Unit 2, of Westinghouse design. Each unit has a gross electrical rating of about 970 megawatts, giving a total gross capacity of roughly 1,940 MW and a net capacity near 1,860 MW.

Construction began in the late 1970s, with Unit 1 entering commercial operation in 1984 and Unit 2 following in 1985.

Koeberg is the only operating nuclear power plant in Africa and provides a substantial share of South Africa’s electricity, particularly for the Western Cape.

The plant is subject to safety oversight by South Africa’s National Nuclear Regulator and international safeguards administered by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Eskom has pursued safety upgrades and life-extension planning to maintain operation in line with evolving safety standards.
