KoboToolbox

KoBoToolbox is a web-based suite of tools for data collection, management, and analysis, designed for humanitarian, development, and research contexts. It provides a form designer, a data collection backend, and data export and analysis capabilities.

The platform includes a web-based Form Builder that uses the XLSForm standard to create surveys and questionnaires. Field teams can collect data offline on Android devices using KoBoCollect or compatible apps; data synchronizes to the cloud when connectivity is available. The system supports multimedia inputs, GPS, skip logic, and repeat groups.

Data management and output: Collected responses can be reviewed, cleaned, and aggregated within the web interface. Data can be exported to CSV, Excel, SPSS, STATA, SAS, or GIS formats; built-in dashboards provide basic visualization, and data can be linked to external analysis tools.

Hosting, access, and privacy: KoBoToolbox is offered as a cloud service with a free tier for humanitarian use and paid options for larger deployments. Organizations can also deploy self-hosted instances in some configurations. Access control, role-based permissions, and data ownership rest with the user organization; data security options include encryption in transit and at rest where supported.

Community and ecosystem: KoBoToolbox is widely used by NGOs, UN agencies, governments, and researchers. It interoperates with the Open Data Kit ecosystem and XLSForm standard, facilitating form exchange and cross-platform data collection.
