Koberwitz

Koberwitz, known in Polish as Kobierzyce, is a village in south-western Poland. It is located in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, within Wrocław County, and serves as the seat of Gmina Kobierzyce. The village lies to the south-west of Wrocław.

Historically part of Silesia, the locality was within the territories controlled by Prussia and later Germany from the 18th century until the end of World War II. It was known by its German name Koberwitz. After 1945, with the borders of Poland redrawn, it became part of Poland and the German population was largely replaced by Polish settlers; the name was polonized to Kobierzyce.

Koberwitz is notable for the Koberwitz Conference held in 1908, where Rudolf Steiner delivered lectures that contributed to the early development of anthroposophical medicine and related agricultural ideas. The material presented there was later incorporated into the broader framework of anthroposophical medicine and agriculture, including methods that influenced biodynamic farming practices.

Today, Kobierzyce is a rural locality and the administrative seat of Gmina Kobierzyce. The surrounding area is characterized by farmland and small settlements, with development influenced by its proximity to the city of Wrocław. The name Koberwitz remains part of historical references to the region.
