Knorpelring

Knorpelring is a German term that translates to "cartilage ring." It refers to a C-shaped piece of cartilage found in the body, most notably in the joints. These rings play a crucial role in the biomechanics and health of the joints they inhabit.

In the knee joint, the most well-known example of a Knorpelring is the meniscus. There are two menisci in each knee: the medial meniscus on the inner side and the lateral meniscus on the outer side. These C-shaped structures deepen the articular surface of the tibia (shinbone), providing stability and acting as shock absorbers. They help distribute weight evenly across the knee joint and reduce friction between the femur (thigh bone) and tibia. Tears to the meniscus are common injuries, particularly in athletes, and can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty with movement.

While the knee menisci are the most prominent examples, similar cartilaginous structures might exist in other articular areas, serving analogous functions of support and load distribution. The composition of Knorpelring tissue is primarily fibrocartilage, which is strong and resilient, capable of withstanding significant pressure and repetitive stress. The health and integrity of these cartilage rings are vital for maintaining joint function and preventing degenerative changes.
