Knole

Knole is a historic stately home near Sevenoaks in Kent, England. The house sits within Knole Park, a large deer park, and is managed as a National Trust property open to visitors. Its origins lie in the late medieval period, and it was progressively developed through the Tudor and early Stuart eras, resulting in a sprawling complex that mixes a medieval core with 16th- and 17th-century façades and interiors.

For centuries Knole served as the principal seat of the Sackville family, one of England’s long-standing noble lineages. The estate has strong literary associations, most notably with Vita Sackville-West, a writer born at Knole, and with Virginia Woolf’s influential essay Knole and the Sackville-Wests, which explored themes of inheritance and gender in relation to the house.

Today Knole is a major National Trust property, offering tours of its rooms and collections. The grounds include the surrounding deer park, which remains a prominent feature of the site and is accessible to visitors. The estate preserves a mix of period rooms, historic furniture and art, and a landscape that reflects its centuries of occupancy by the Sackville family and their heirs.
