Knappschafts

Knappschaft refers to a historical German social insurance system primarily for miners and their dependents. The term "Knappschaft" is derived from the German word "Knappe," meaning apprentice or miner. These systems emerged in mining regions during the medieval period to provide mutual support and financial assistance in cases of accident, illness, or death.

Over time, the Knappschaft evolved from a voluntary guild-like association into a mandatory public insurance scheme.
