Klorofyllförlust

Klorofyllförlust, also known as chlorophyll loss, is a natural process occurring in plants. It signifies the breakdown and degradation of chlorophyll pigments within plant tissues, most notably leaves. Chlorophyll is the primary pigment responsible for absorbing sunlight for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy. When chlorophyll is lost, the green color of the plant fades, revealing other pigments that were present all along but masked by the chlorophyll.

This phenomenon is most commonly observed during autumn in deciduous plants. As the days shorten and temperatures drop, the plant begins to senesce, or age. Chlorophyll production decreases, and existing chlorophyll is broken down. This breakdown is often triggered by enzymes that degrade the pigment. The yellow and orange colors that become visible are due to carotenoids, while reds and purples come from anthocyanins, which are often newly synthesized during senescence.

Klorofyllförlust can also occur prematurely due to various environmental stresses. These include drought, nutrient deficiencies (particularly nitrogen), excessive sunlight, disease, or physical damage. In such cases, the loss of chlorophyll can significantly impair the plant's ability to photosynthesize, leading to reduced growth and potentially death.
